Wilderness Train Walpurgis

A unique full board train journey from Stockholm through the Northern Inland and Arctic region of Sweden

You travel in first-class carriages from the 40s, 50s, 60s with locomotives from different time periods. One of the highlights is traveling with the steam locomotive, a travel that takes you back in time. The carriages themselves are high-end experiences as you travel comfortably in armchairs. Another highlight of this trip are our outstanding travel guides. 
The food on board are cooked by our Headwaiter Mårten and his committed team. You will also dine local food in our selected restaurants along the journey.
The travel includes several authentic stops with activities such as visits to the Icehotel and the Inlandsbanan museums.

Description of the guided mine tour from the arranger: "The mine in Kiruna is the world’s largest underground iron-stone mine. It is a fascinating operation where the iron-stone is mined far below the surface using remotely operated machines and driverless trains. One of the best attractions in Sweden, the LKAB’s Visitor Centre, is located here – a mine that the Lonely Planet international guide book gave its highest rating".

 

Accessibility

During this trip you travel in the railway museum's first-class carriages from the 40s, 50s and 60s. Here are some things that are good to keep in mind before booking this trip:
The train is not wheelchair adjusted. There are steep steps to get on board the train. While on the train you are seated in low armchairs, the toilet is small and there are long walking distances on board the train. 
It is important that you are able to get on and off the train on your own, as well as walking between the carriages on board without help. Transfer to the hotels are included.

  • This journey is a co-operation with the Swedish Railroad museum in Gävle. Different kind of locomotives are used including a steam locomotive.

  • Day 1; 24/4:: STOCKHOLM - ÖSTERSUND - ÅRE

    Departure 08:17 from Stockholm Central. Travel in first-class museum carriages from the 40s, 50s and the 60s. Lunch will be served on board the train. The food is prepared on the train and will be served by our restaurant team on board. Stop in Östersund 14:30-17:16. Take a stroll in the cozy town centre or along lake Storsjön. Arrival to Åre 18:19. Dinner at Werséns restaurant in Åre village. Accommodation at Holiday Club by lake Åresjön including breakfast.

    STOCKHOLM - ÖSTERSUND - ÅRE

  • Day 2; 25/4:: ÅRE - ARVIDSJAUR

    In the morning a bus will take you to Östersund Station where the steam train awaits. Steam train journey Östersund-Hoting and travel along Inlandsbanan Hoting-Arvidsjaur with diesel locomotive. Lunch and dinner is served on board the train. Arrival to Arvidsjaur in the evening. Accommodation at Hotel Laponia including breakfast.

    ÅRE - ARVIDSJAUR

  • Day 3; 26/4:: ARVIDSJAUR - JOKKMOKK

    A day to sleep in! Departure from Arvidsjaur before lunch. Lunch and dinner on the train. Stop at the Navvy museum in Moskosel, at Piteälvsbron and the Arctic Circle. Arrival to Jokkmokk in the evening. Upon arrival a local taste show by Eva Gunnare awaits half the group at the hotel. Accommodation at Hotel Jokkmokk including breakfast.

    ARVIDSJAUR - JOKKMOKK

  • Day 4; 27/4:: JOKKMOKK - GÄLLIVARE

    In the morning the other half of the group will experience the local taste show by Eva Gunnare at the hotel. A visit at Ájtte museum and Sámi centre will follow. By lunch the train depart Jokkmokk to Gällivare. Lunch is served on board the train. Dinner will be served at restaurant Glada Kocken, located beautifully by the mountain Dundret. Accommodation at Grand Hotel Lapland including breakfast.

    JOKKMOKK - GÄLLIVARE

  • Day 5; 28/4:: GÄLLIVARE - ABISKO - KIRUNA

    In the morning the train will take you to Kiruna, where a bus awaits to take you up to the mountains to Abisko Tourist Station where you will be served lunch with a fantastic view. The bus will depart from Abisko in the afternoon around 16:00 to your hotel. Dinner is served at the hotel. Accommodation at Scandic Kiruna including breakfast.

    GÄLLIVARE - ABISKO - KIRUNA

  • Day 6; 29/4:: JUKKASJÄRVI-KIRUNA

    Enjoy Jukkasjärvi and Kiruna a whole day! After breakfast the bus takes you to Jukkasjärvi where you get to visit the Ice Hotels' exhibitions. At Jukkasjärvi you also get a guided tour at Nutti Sámi Siida including Sami fika (coffee & cake). Lunch will be served at SPIS in Kiruna. A guided mine tour will follow for those who has pre-booked. Locally inspired dinner will be served at Camp Ripan in Kiruna. Accommodation at Hotel Scandic Kiruna including breakfast.

    JUKKASJÄRVI-KIRUNA

  • Day 7; 30/4: WALPURGIS NIGHT: KIRUNA - UMEÅ

    A day to sleep in! Departure from Kiruna before lunch. Train to Umeå. Lunch and dinner is served on the train. Arrival to Umeå C approxmately 19:00. Walpurgis night celebration upon arrival. Accommodation at Clarion Hotel Umeå including breakfast.

    KIRUNA - UMEÅ

  • Day 8; 1/5:: UMEÅ - STOCKHOLM

    Enjoy the day of the trip with The Wilderness Train! Departure from Umeå in the morning. Travel to Stockholm. Lunch and dinner is served on the train. Arrival to your final destination Stockholm C in the evening, prel. 21:00.
